سواد توان خواندن و نوشتن و محاسبات ساده ریاضی، بهره مندی از دانش عمومی و اطلاعات سطحی، یا در اختیار داشتن دانش تخصصی و عمیق، سواد تنها به مکتب رفتن ، کارکردن و یا آموختن نیست .سواد تنها این نیست که داکتر شدن باشد بلکه هدف والاتر و بالاتر آن، رسانیدن جامعه به سطح سواد علمی است و سواد علمی یعنی تربیت كودكان و جوانانی آگاه و سازنده كه: 

ـ آماده گی رو به رو شدن با شرایط اجتماعی فردا را داشته باشند ،
ـ بتوانند مسایل و مشكلات پیچیده جهان فردا را حل كنند؛ مسایلی كه امروز بر ما پوشیده اند، 
ـ خود را عضو موثر و مسوول جامعه بدانند و بتوانند در تصمیم گیری های اجتماعی مشاركت فعال داشته باشند، 
ـ توانایی برقراری ارتباط با افراد، حفظ محیط زیست، تنظیم جمعیت و صرفه جویی را داشته باشند، 
 ـ مولد علم و فناوری باشند و توانایی تحلیل مسایل ناشناخته فردا و خلاقیت لازم را برای حل آنها داشته باشند،
